Ethiopian Craft Initiative

ETHIOPIA

Ethiopian Craft Initiative, also known as Gemini Trust, works exclusively with families who are parents of twins and other multiple birth groupings. The group works in jewelry making, a trade that has been part of the Axum tradition since the Queen of Sheba brought silversmiths with her when returning from a visit to King Solomon. The group also makes baskets and textiles. We purchase woven grass baskets from Gemini Trust.

Profile Of Ethiopia

Cradled between Africa and Europe, Ethiopia was a significant ally for the Roman Empire. History attributes the first written African language, Ge'ez, to Ethiopians. Approximately 80 languages are spoken in Ethiopia, though Amharic is now the predominant tongue.

With roots in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, Ethiopia has never been colonized and has traditionally been a religious nation — as evidenced by early Ethiopian literature. During the past 25 years Ethiopia has experienced instability after the rise and fall of a Marxist regime.
