Comparte

CHILE

Comparte, a nonprofit trading organization, was organized by the Social Union of Christian Businessmen (USEC) to provide social assistance to disadvantaged craftspeople. Based in Santiago, Chile's capital city, Comparte markets products for a variety of artisan groups located in Chile. In addition to conducting regional workshops, Comparte provides training, organizational assistance and marketing and design services to these groups. Comparte also features their crafts in markets and commercial craft stores in the region. A World Away purchases ceramic nativities, dishes and jars, clay banks, mobiles and musical instruments including rainsticks and ocarinas from Comparte.

Profile Of Chile

Chile is tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains and offers an eclectic environment that is alive with European and indigenous influences. Ninety percent of Chileans are Roman Catholic, though native traditions also have a thriving presence.

In 1973 the Chilean government of President Allende was overtaken by a military coup led by General Pinochet. Though Pinochet's dictatorship ended in 1990, the country remains a delicate democracy with the majority of the wealth in the hands of a few.
